My nose twitches as a sweet strawberry scent brushes across my awareness. I can’t see anything, like I’m floating in a cloud of darkness, only it doesn’t feel ominous. It’s like the world’s softest blanket wrapping me up in a cocoon of safety and love that I’ve never actually felt before in real life.

“Ever,” a voice whispers, cutting through the nothingness with a familiar, soothing tone that I try to get closer to, even if I don’t remember where I know it from.

“Where are you?” I call out, but my voice disappears into the void.

“Come back to me,” it whispers again, caressing my ears as a shiver runs down my spine. My back arches as my power explodes out of me as if commanded by the seductive voice, sending healing energy into every molecule of my body.

When my eyes fly open with a gasp, I flop down on the bed like my back really was arched in reality and not just the space my brain or soul or whatever was floating in up until this moment. Cool hands skim over my forehead and down my face, and a pair of worried blue and green eyes appear in front of my face.

She’s all I can see, the focus of my entire existence.

“What happened?” I ask, blinking slowly while I try to remember, but I’m coming up blank. My body is stiff like I’ve been laying here a long time without using my muscles, but nothing seems to be damaged.

“We got attacked and even though you took down a few of them, the fuckers managed to get in a parting shot,” Crew says, and I shift my gaze off Willa for the first time since opening my eyes. He’s got his arm slung around her waist even as she leans over me, and Hiro stands on her other side nearly touching her but not quite. Both of them look completely unscathed, and irritation flares up inside of me.

I know it’s irrational, but a surge of jealousy rushes through me that Crew can so easily be with Willa. There’s no second guessing what she might think once she sees the real him. There’s no feeling like the one who’ll hold everyone back. There’s no wondering if she’ll want to run once she sees what’s underneath the surface.

The sheet brushes across my skin and I become acutely aware of my left leg below the knee, specifically where my prosthesis should be and isn’t. Shit. My eyes cut back to Willa but she doesn’t give anything away. Did she see? Does she know?

My gut twists and I look away. “Am I the only one who got hurt?” I hear myself ask, before I can stop the words from coming out. They sound bitter because they are. The answer is obvious considering they’re all standing around my bed looking perfectly fine, but the masochist in me wants to hear the answer. Knox is missing, so maybe I won’t be the only weak one this one time.

It’s like I’m waiting for all my worst fears to be confirmed with a head nod or a yes.
